The UK’s points-based immigration system: How does it impact you?

From today, applications are open to foreign nationals (inclusive of those from the European Union), who wish to work in the UK from 1 January 2021.

Here’s what you need to know.

“From 1 January 2021, free movement will end, and the UK will introduce a points-based immigration system. The new system will treat EU* and non-EU citizens equally. Anyone you want to hire from outside the UK, excluding Irish citizens, will need to apply for permission in advance.”

Additionally:

  • Those wishing to work in the UK will need
    • Required points for their job offer at the necessary skill level
    • To be competent in English
    • To earn a minimum £25,600
  • EU citizens (and families) already living in the UK by 31 December 2020 do not need to apply through the new points-based system but can apply to the EU settlement scheme by 20 June 2021
  • Applications for Global Talent / Innovator / Start Up visas are now open

EU Settlement Scheme: ID document scanner locations

The Home Office have recently issued guidance on locations where you can go to get your biometric ID document scanned if you do not have an Android device with near field communication (NFC).

Here’s what you need to know.

(Updated as of 26 November 2020)

“This information is for people applying to the EU Settlement Scheme.

You can make an appointment to have your ID document scanned and verified for you if you cannot use the EU Exit: ID Document Check app. The purpose of the scan is to confirm your identity so that you’ll be able to make an application to the EU Settlement Scheme.

You must not start your application for settled status before you attend your appointment.”

Prove your right to rent in England

The Home Office have recently issued guidance on proving your right to rent in England.

Here’s what you need to know.

 (Updated as of 25 November 2020)

“You can use this service if you”:

  • have a biometric residence card or permit
  • have settled or pre-settled status
  • applied for a visa and used the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to scan your identity document on your phone

“If you’re an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen, you can continue to use your passport or national identity card to prove you can rent in England until 30 June 2021.

If you do not have any of these documents, check how to prove your right to rent.

You do not need to prove your right to rent in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.”

What you’ll need

“You’ll need your date of birth and details of one of the following”:

  • your biometric residence permit
  • your biometric residence card
  • your passport or national identity card

View a tenant’s right to rent in England

The Home Office have recently issued guidance on a tenant’s right to rent in England.

Here’s what you need to know.

 (Updated as of 25 November 2020)

This service is to be used when checking a tenant’s right to rent a residential property in England if you are:

  • the landlord
  • an agent acting on behalf of the landlord
  • a tenant subletting without your landlord’s permission
  • You do not need to check a tenant’s right to rent property in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Additionally, this service is to be used if your tenant:

  • has a biometric residence card or permit
  • has settled or pre-settled status
  • applied for a visa and used the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to scan their identity document on their phone

Here’s what you need to know.

This information is to help carriers check their passengers’ travel documents. It lists the countries and territories of citizens who need a visa for the UK.”
