(Updated as of 06 June 2021)

What is an S2 Healthcare Visitor?

An S2 Healthcare Visitor refers to those from the EEA or Switzerland that have planned healthcare treatment in another EEA country at the expense of their home state.

When can you come to the UK as an S2 Healthcare Visitor?

An individual may come to the UK as an S2 Healthcare Visitor if:

  • Under the S2 arrangement, it has been authorised for you to receive planned healthcare in the UK
  • You’re travelling with, or joining someone who may be in receipt of healthcare under the S2 arrangement, and your role is to provide aid

Am I eligible for an S2 Healthcare Visitor visa?

Patients must request authorisation for their planned healthcare treatment in the UK (under the S2 arrangement) before 31 December 2020 and must have evidence or approval from their home state and agreed arrangements with the UK treating facility.

If you’re accompanying or joining a patient to provide aid, you are required to make your own S2 Healthcare Visitor visa (should you require one). Additionally, you must be an EEA or Switzerland resident.

What information do I need to provide for an S2 Healthcare Visitor visa?

Patients must provide:

  • your S2 certificate of entitlement to scheduled treatment (also known as a ‘Portable Document S2’)
  • a current passport or other valid travel document
  • financial documents showing that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay and for your return or onward journey

If you’re accompanying or joining a patient, you must provide:

  • evidence the person you are accompanying or joining is undergoing S2 authorised treatment in the UK and qualifies as an S2 Healthcare Visitor, which must be either of the following:
    • details of the patient’s valid S2 Healthcare Visitor visa or permission to stay, or
    • a copy of the patient’s S2 certificate of entitlement to scheduled treatment (“Portable Document S2”) and a copy of the bio data page of the patient’s passport or travel document
  • proof that you are resident in the EEA or Switzerland
  • your current passport or valid travel document
  • financial documents showing that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay and for your return or onward journey

When can you apply for an S2 Healthcare Visitor visa?

The earliest you can apply for an S2 Healthcare Visitor visa is 3 months before you are due to travel and in most instances, decisions are received within a week when applying from outside the UK.

Can I extend my S2 Healthcare Visitor Visa?

On an S2 Healthcare Visitor visa, you can stay in the UK for up to 6 months. If the planned healthcare treatment period is taking longer than 6 months, you can apply (for free) within the UK to extend your stay. You are required to complete the necessary application form and to show prove you still meet the eligibility requirements.

Once you meet the requirements, i.e. you are an S2 Healthcare Visitor with the required evidence, you will need to send an email to the S2 Healthcare Visitor Extensions (Only) inbox at: s2healthcarevisitorextensionsonly@homeoffice.gov.uk.
